Welcome to the Where2Stay-SouthAfrica.com Travel Survey page. Throughout the year we will be running surveys looking a various aspects of the South African travel industry. This first survey is looking at South Africa Accommodation. Results of the survey will be published in October 2013.

Accommodation Survey 2013 Results
Here is a summary of the results from our 2013 Survey on accommodation in South Africa.

Demographics
General Information:
98% of respondents were South African comprising 73% female and 27% male.

Age Group:
18 to 25 - 12.1%
26 to 34 - 25%
35 to 44 - 27.9%
45 to 54 - 23.6%
55 to 64 - 9.5%
65 and above - 1.9%

By far the most popular holiday accommodation type is 'Self-Catering' with some 65% declaring this as their preferred option. In second and third place came Hotels and then Guesthouses/Bed and Breakfast establishments respectively.

In the current difficult economic climate self-catering accommodation offers a cheaper  and more flexibale alternative especially for young families watching the pennies. Between the beginning of 2012 and September 2013 the price of petrol in South Africa has increased 27.2% increasing the overall cost of taking a holiday here. Some 49% of respondents in our survey said that 'R500 or less was a fair price to pay for two people sharing accommodation overnight'.
